Il sera un des “émirs” des Groupes Islamiques Armés (GIA) en Algérie puis de la région Sahara-Sahel du-Groupe salafiste pour la prédication et le combat (GSPC), aujourd’hui appelé “Al-Qaïda au Maghreb islamique”.
On reproche entre autres à Mokhtar Belmokhtar, le meurtre, en février 2006, de treize douaniers.
On le dit à la tête d’une katiba (unité) d’une centaine d’hommes d’AQMI.
